The Faculty of Humanities of the Dzemal Bijedic University of Mostar is a representative educational and scientific institution that has achieved significant results during its twelve-year existence. The first steps towards the establishment of the Faculty were taken back in 1999, when the Department of Languages was formed.
Two departments started their work then:
- The Department of Bosnian Language and Literature, as a two-subject four-year course,
- Department of English Language and Literature, as a three-year course.
However, the social need for humanities personnel opened up new perspectives and visions for development. When the Faculty of Humanities was officially established on March 25, 2002, by the Decision of the Council of the Dzemal Bijedic University of Mostar, great changes occurred. In extremely difficult conditions, the Faculty grew and developed, which today, in terms of the number of students and its importance for the entire social community, is one of the key driving forces of our University. By developing new study programs, the Faculty of Humanities has achieved significant results in all segments of scientific and research work. It is important to emphasize that the results achieved were the result of the efforts of all employees, as well as numerous associates from other Universities, without whose support the teaching process and the advancement of our staff would not be possible.
Today, the Faculty of Humanities offers the opportunity to study in six departments:
- Department of Bosnian Language and Literature,
- Department of English Language and Literature,
- Department of History,
- Department of German Language and Literature,
- Department of Communication Studies,
- Department of Journalism and Public Relations
- Department of Turkish Language and Literature.
In the academic year 2008, the Teaching and Research Council of the Faculty adopted a new Curriculum and Program, so candidates were able to study according to the Bologna principles and standards. In all departments of the Faculty of Humanities, a study concept based on the 4 + 1 principle has been introduced, which practically means that a student, after passing the exams in the first four years and defending the thesis, has the right to a higher professional degree and enrollment in the second cycle, i.e. to master's studies. Master studies at the Faculty of Humanities begin in the academic year 2012/13. year. The curriculum foresees its duration in the length of one academic year, after which the master's students will acquire the title of master of profession. Interested candidates will be able to continue their training on a three-year doctoral course, after which they will obtain the title of Doctor of Humanities.
The main focus of the teaching process is placed on domestic, young and ambitious staff. By implementing a proper personnel policy, within the limits of what is possible, our Faculty has grown from the former five employees (Prof. Dr. Elbisa Ustamujić, Dean of the Faculty, then assoc. Dijana Hadžizukić and Adi Fejzić, and Čelebi Tikveš in the Student Service and Selma Raljević, then the Faculty's clerk) to a team of 21 employees in total, of which 9 are doctors of science and 10 are masters. This is only part of the permanent commitment of the Faculty's management, which strives to round off the personnel policy in all departments through the advancement of its own employees. However, further personnel development will not be possible without the support of the wider social community and the resolution of very difficult financial and legal issues. In addition to personnel issues, many other challenges await the Faculty in the coming period. First of all, the complete integration of the Faculty within the Dzemal Bijedic University of Mostar, then the accreditation of the University, and certainly an adequate resolution of the financial, infrastructural and legal status of our higher education institution.
Dear students, the Faculty of Humanities and its departments are at your disposal and offer cooperation. We cordially invite you to join forces to create a more beautiful and humane world, to the satisfaction not only of us but also of future generations.
