The Organization of the Archives of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, the Faculty of Humanities of the "Džemal Bijedić" University in Mostar, and the Association for Modern History Sarajevo, held a scientific conference entitled "Fortifications and Military Communications on the Territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina from Antiquity to 1918" on June 7 and 8 at the Mostar Hotel in Mostar.

At the conference, the following topics were discussed through the appropriate units: types, method of construction, extensions, upgrades, territorial layout and functions of fortifications, auxiliary ranks and services in fortifications, the issue of water supply, hygiene and health care, everyday life, as well as the issue of fortifications in folk songs.

The Dean of the Faculty of Humanities of the 'Džemal Bijedić' University in Mostar, Prof. Dr. Edim Šator, said that this is a broadly-based conference that will highlight the importance and significance of fortification and military communication in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina until 1918 from various aspects.

"Our goal was to focus on researching various fortifications, as well as military communications in the territory of BiH, which is rich in various types of cultural and historical heritage. We want to show and point out the different ways in which these fortifications, among other things, can be used in cultural tourism," added Dean Prof. Dr. Edim Šator.

Although fortifications have always had a military function, numerous other aspects were also highlighted at this conference, such as the environment, human geography, influence on the construction of identity, and the like.

The scientific conference was held under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Education and Science.
