English language and literature

The Department of English Language and Literature of the Faculty of Humanities, University of Džemal Bijedić in Mostar has been operating since 1999.

Since then, our Department has successfully overcome numerous challenges and achieved significant progress thanks to its expert, professional and quality teaching staff and management. By staying at some of the prestigious higher education institutions across Europe and the USA as guest lecturers, our professors have enriched their teaching experience and gained cooperation for the benefit of the Department towards its further progress. Their quality is also reflected in their participation in numerous scientific conferences and seminars, published scientific papers, textbooks, and books.

At the beginning of the first cycle of the four-year undergraduate study, students are introduced to the basic concepts of English linguistics and continue to study the linguistic disciplines of morphology, phonetics, morphosyntax, syntax, semantics, pragmatics. They improve their language skills through the study of modern English, academic writing, translation, as well as through a wide range of elective courses. With an introduction to literature, students are introduced to basic concepts, literary theories and an overview of literature, after which English and American literature becomes the focus of further study (English Renaissance literature, Romanticism, Modernism, Postmodernism, Shakespearean studies, American transcendentalism, American modernism ...). Also, during the first cycle, students acquire the necessary knowledge and skills in foreign language teaching methodology, where, along with methodological practice, they gain their first experience in working with students.

The department has established successful collaborations with primary and secondary schools in HNK, cultural and educational institutions such as the King Fahd Cultural Center in Mostar, and the Zemzem kindergarten. In these institutions, our students have been successfully completing their first classroom internships for many years.

The study is organized in two cycles (4+1) . Upon completion of the first cycle, our students earn a diploma as a teacher of English language and literature, and have the opportunity to enroll in one year of master's studies where they choose a teaching, translation or literary major.

During their studies at our Department, students have the opportunity to stay at some of the foreign universities thanks to the Erasmus+ and Mevlana exchange programs. Using these programs, our numerous students have stayed at some of the universities in Spain, Italy, Poland, Austria, Germany, etc.
