Journalism and public relations

The undergraduate study Journalism and Public Relations at the Faculty of Humanities is a three-year study with 180 ECTS.

Journalism is an activity that deals with the collection, processing and distribution of information in traditional and new media. The aim of this activity is to timely inform the public about current events, topics and problems that are relevant to society and the wider community. Journalism also deals with the detection and reporting of social anomalies, such as corruption and crime. The fundamental principles of quality journalism are objectivity, truthfulness, accuracy, timeliness and comprehensibility, as well as respect for ethical standards and professional norms. In line with technological progress, the journalistic profession is subject to frequent changes, which requires continuous improvement and adaptation to new trends.

On the other hand, public relations is a planned and continuous activity that aims to establish and maintain a good and positive relationship between an organization/company/institution and the target public. This includes various activities, such as: creating and distributing promotional materials, creating and implementing projects, organizing events, managing social media, communicating with the media, and managing crisis communication. Public relations are extremely important for organizations/companies/institutions that aim to differentiate themselves from their competitors in the market, but also to be perceived by the public as positive and socially responsible. Public relations contribute to the realization of the business and social goals of the organization/company/institution.

The curriculum of the Journalism and Public Relations study program envisages the acquisition of practical skills and knowledge in the field of social sciences and humanities that will enable future graduates to actively participate in scientific research work and in the preparation and development of projects, as well as their implementation.

After completing the three-year course in Journalism and Public Relations, students will be able to independently work on tasks related to the creation of media content, management and development of media programs and media content), have a high degree of acquired theoretical and practical knowledge for working in media houses, and acquire the fundamental knowledge required for shaping media content. Also, they will have the necessary knowledge to work in public relations services in various institutions (politics, culture, education, state and public services, diplomatic and consular missions). As part of regular practical classes, workshops as part of the course, but also specially organized professional practice, students will have the opportunity to develop their abilities and skills that will provide them with the possibility of employment, self-employment and competitiveness on the labor market. It is important to point out that after completing the Journalism and Public Relations studies, students will be able to start their own business or independently find and perform jobs in the aforementioned fields.

Self-employment opportunities:

- as freelance journalists who can work on gathering information and creating stories and articles for various publications or media, and can work from home or travel to report on various events or topics;

- as independent PR consultants who can work for clients who need help in developing and implementing PR strategies.

Journalists and PR professionals can become self-employed through online platforms such as Upwork or Fiverr, which have gained immense popularity.
